A historic house on the Wild Atlantic Way carefully restored and reopened as a Boutique Guest House
The House
Currane House was built in the 1870s as the residence of the Dickens family, for Captain Charles Scrase Dickens, the English landlord of Currane and a relative of the writer Charles Dickens.
In the late 1940s, the house was sold to the local schoolmaster and later became a traditional public house, serving the local community for many years. More recently, it was used as a filming location for My Sailor, My Love.
In 2021, new owners Carmel Sweeney and Alex Blackmun began a full restoration of the house. The aim was to preserve its character while reimagining it as a calm, welcoming place to stay.
Currane House opened as a boutique B&B in 2025.
Blue Flag Beaches
Achill has several Blue Flag beaches, Keem Bay sits at the island’s western edge, is regularly named among the most beautiful beaches in Ireland and was used as a filming location for The Banshees of Inisherin. Keel Beach is the island’s centre for water sports, with surfing and kite surfing and saunas. Dugort Beach has saunas and yoga classes on the beach in the summer months - Sabhna Saunas.
The Sea
A small number of local operators run boat trips along Achill’s coastline. These offer a different perspective on the island, passing cliffs, sea stacks and inlets that are inaccessible by land. From nearby Westport, boats also travel into Clew Bay, an area known for its many small islands.
Sea swimming is popular around Achill, at the main beaches and also in quieter local spots. The Atlantic is a bit chilly / invigorating!
